Bubonik Funk
Bubonik Funk is an American rock band, formed in 2006, consisting of Stefan Kallander (guitar, vocals), Dylan Ellett (vocals, keys), Nick Mcowen (bass guitar), and Daniel Allison (drums, vocals). With their funky, guitar-driven soulful sound, Bubonik Funk are regularly cited as a groove and jam band. However, the band's individualistic style draws from many sources and transcends any one music genre.
Bubonik Funk is held in high regard for their emphasis on independent management, full control of the creative process, and a widening sphere of popularity despite any aid from commercial companies, formal management or record labels. In 2007, the band began playing shows in the Charlotte area, venues such as Tremont Music Hall, Neighborhood Theatre, and the Evening Muse.
By 2009, Bubonik Funk had played as far north as Boston, and for college crowds of UNC Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, UNC Wilmington and Berklee School of Music in Boston.
In 2010 Bubonik Funk secured the first track of Jeff Hahne of Creative Loafing's "Homebrew" album, a mix CD of prominent regional musical acts. The band recorded a second E.P. entitled "Wink at the Devil". The recording was done with a single engineer, Dustin Hofsess, but the creative process, tracking and distribution fell in the hands of the band itself.
For the majority of 2011 the band was inactive while at various colleges, but despite this, has played a sold-out show at the Soapbox in Wilmington, opened for Zach Deputy in Atlanta, GA. Opened for Grammy winner Johnny Lang at the Charlotte Fillmore and played the festival stage at Drumstrong on May 21st in Waxhaw, NC. The band plans to record a third E.P. in July of 2011, and will be playing shows along the east coast.
